Young Entrepreneur McKayla Kinnaird

McKayla Kinnaird was born into an entrepreneurial family and has been able to participate in family projects. She took part in the Lemonade Day Youth Entrepreneurship Program for three consecutive years, where she learned firsthand the basics of food preparation and customer service. At age five, McKayla could explain her business to visitors.

McKayla began baking at six years of age. Her mother supported her early kitchen experimentation, reinforcing the importance of hygienic food preparation and cleanup. McKayla is blessed to have an older cousin who owns a cooking business and was one of McKayla’s early mentors. McKayla is naturally curious and frequently starts conversations about food with family, friends, and chefs she happens to meet.

When McKayla started Sticky and Sweet, Bread, Buns and More, she already understood many basic business concepts. She decided her specialty would be cinnamon buns, but she would offer other items too. Most of her products are sticky, sweet, and delicious, just as her business name promises.

In the fall of 2018, at eight years of age, McKayla entered the first Get a Bigger Wagon Young Entrepreneur Awards (GABWYEA) competition. This annual contest takes place in affiliation with the Haddock Entrepreneurial Speaker Series (HESS) at Edwards School of Business. McKayla didn’t win an award that year, but she cheered the other children on, made a few mental notes, and posed for photos with the Haddocks and the Dean of Edwards School of Business.

In 2019, at age 9, McKayla entered the GABWYEA competition for a second time. She had fine-tuned her business and eagerly shared what she had learned.  This time, McKayla won the award for her category. She used her $500 prize to buy a kitchen mixer and supplies.

As McKayla matures, we are sure her entrepreneurial nature will continue to blossom. Her love of food preparation and her passion for playing hockey, dancing, fishing, exploring, and taking photos will remain. This young lady will never feel bored, and people who get to know her will enjoy watching her evolve.

The third GABWYEA competition opens on September 1, 2020, and closes on December 1, 2020. For details, email maureenhaddock@sasktel.net after September 1, 2020. The awards, in conjunction with the 14th presentation in the annual Haddock Entrepreneurial Speaker Series, will take place in mid-January 2021 at Edwards School of Business or virtually if need be due to COVID-19.

We hope you will watch our past GABWYEA awards presentations.
